Plastic Bags Banned?

Coming on vacation to Hilton Head? Don't expect to see many single use plastic bags here. As of November 1, 2018, the plastic bags have been banned in Beaufort County. Businesses were given 10 months by the county to be completely ready for the change. No more running into a grocery store, grabbing a couple things and coming out with a plastic bag. Now, you get a paper bag in most places. And, of course, almost everyone has a reusable bag for sale with their company name on it. I may have to jump on the bandwagon and get some made as well. :)

Now, when you hear plastic bag ban, we are talking about restaurants, food stores, Walmarts, etc...… We are still using plastic bags for our garbage bags, newspaper bags, bags for pet waste, dry cleaning, etc... But, if you do not want to start collecting paper bags, either reuse them or buy some reusable bags. It is also smart to keep them in your car. Why is this happening? It will protect our coastal marine life and improve our environment. Many birds and sea turtles get entangled in the plastic bags. Also, when pieces of plastic bags are laying around, they tend to eat them. That leads to blockages in their digestive track which then leads many to death.

Beaufort County was the 1st in South Carolina to adopt a countywide ban. We sure love our wildlife and our gorgeous environment here on the island. Help us keep it that way. We even had a "strawless summer" from July - Sept. Come visit us!!
