If I got my way (which is not terribly common), I would remove EVERY. SINGLE. WALL. I would use rugs and furniture to delineate rooms and all the rooms would be one!
We love when our clients as for an "open concept" kitchen and living area. It's such a nice way to spend time with family and friends, to be able to cook and socialize at the same time and everything just feels so much bigger.
This homeowner was looking to have more seating in the kitchen for their family so we suggested taking out the peninsula and bulky upper cabinets in the kitchen, adding a large island and combining the space with the adjacent family room and sun room. Take a look at a few of the before pictures.
Once we established the design and ordered materials, our crew got to work! To make the rooms flow we pulled out the carpet and bamboo floors, ran white oak with a dark walnut stain throughout, and added a lime stone to the sun room.
Our client specified that they wanted the island to be a different color than the rest of the kitchen, but otherwise was very trusting with the rest of the aesthetic. We went with a shaker style cabinet, a linear tile for the backsplash with honed Carrara marble tops.
We love the way this space turned out and so did our client! They hired us to handle the interior design of the house for them, as it is a second home and they live out of town. It's comfortable, cozy and open, just the way I want EVERY. HOUSE. TO. BE!
